Focus on Progress
To get yourself and your team off to a good start for the new year, focus on progress. Our research discovered that fostering progress in meaningful work is the most important way to keep people highly engaged at work — even if that progress is a “small win.”
We call this phenomenon the progress principle; it works because people want to feel that they are contributing to...

Respecting Your Privacy - An Outdated Idea?
The Wall Street Journal published an article “Your Apps are Watching You”, which detailed the behaviour of some very well known and popular apps. Some of these apps send information (including location and contacts data) to third parties, such as advertising companies.
The app market is tough and fiercely competitive. A lot of great, high quality apps are free or priced so cheaply...

Update News
I mentioned this on Twitter earlier (follow @choicebychoice), but thought I had better put it on the blog too.
I had hoped to get the bugfix release submitted to the App Store tonight, but testing found some more unexpected issues with the app running under iOS versions 4.0 and above. Rather than risk releasing an unreliable build of the app, I’ve decided to hold it back for a week and do...
Issue with iOS 4.2
It has come to my attention that there is an issue with the “Choice by Choice” app and the new version of iOS. The issue occurs when selecting a date for recording a choice. Instead of day names appearing in the spinner, some numbers are displayed instead.
I’m looking into the issue and will get a fix out ASAP.
This will be followed by another release which will add some new...

Did You Test Yourself Today?
Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers, popularised the idea that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert in something. It failed to mention that the quality of that practice is of paramount importance.
Purposeful practice is challenging. It tests you, and forces you to try to achieve things that you think are out of reach. Failure, setbacks and dead ends are to be expected - if...

Willpower and Belief
A great deal of recent research (some of which I’ve written about in this blog) suggests that our capacity for self-control is much like a muscle. Its strength varies from person to person, and also from moment to moment, depending on how recently and how hard it’s had to work. (Think about how your legs can feel like jelly after a long run, and you get the idea.)

One Man's Choices: 13 weeks of Food Choices →
One of the reasons I wrote my iPhone app (Choice by Choice) was to answer the question: Why do I keep failing to achieve my goal to lose weight. I wanted to create something that would help me easily and quickly be able to see just how well or badly I was really doing. I have two goals entered in…

V1.1 has been approved!
4th February 2010
I’m pleased to announce that V1.1 of “Choice by Choice” has been approved and will be appearing in the App Store within the next 24 hours. It’s already arrived in the UK App Store, but I imagine it might take a while for it to be rolled out across all territories.
I recommend all users to upgrade as soon as possible to take advantage of the new...

V1.1 submitted to the App Store
Hi,
I am pleased to say I have finally submitted the first update of the Choice by Choice app to the App Store, just a few minutes ago (30 January 2010 at 15:30 GMT).
The update addresses a number of bugs and the most popular feature requests sent in via the feedback mechanism in the app, as well as those mentioned in reviews.
One of the goals in developing Choice by Choice was to build a...
An Update about the App Update
Hi,
I was hoping to have released the app update for submission to the app store today, but at the last minute I ran into an unexpected bug. Sort of like an “unknown unknown” situation as Don Rumsfeld might put it.
So I’m working on the fix, and will be going through a whole other round of testing.
Apologies for the delay, and rest assured I am really trying to get this...
App Update almost ready to Drop
The next version of Choice by Choice is almost complete, and I’m hoping to release it to the App Store at the start of next week.

Starting Work on the Next Update
Today I have been going over the feedback received for Version 1.00 of Choice by Choice. I wrote a little bit about how important constructive criticism is over on the company blog.
The feedback is being used to prioritize the features for the next free update of the app.
Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to send in feedback. And if you have any more feedback, don’t hesitate to...

For years, runners have been able to take advantage of Nike+, a nifty accessory that lets your iPod communicate with your shoes to turn it into a personal running coach of sorts. Soon, cyclists will have access to a tool that’s in the same vein as Nike+, but far more powerful. It’s called Pedal Brain, and it allows your iPhone or iPod Touch to receive and interpret data from a variety of exercise...
